STA Public Relations

The STA has been very active within the Smithtown School District and the Smithtown community. This year the focus of the public relations committee is to continue to build a sense of union identity and responsibility through activities that involve the entire membership, and to improve relationships between members of the STA and administration, the Board of Education, and the community. The following lists many of our accomplishments and activities this year:

* Donated shipping costs for books being sent to St. Paul Mission School

* Raised money for Autism Awareness-6/6/08 for the Autism Speaks Association

* Good news postcards sent to students periodically throughout the year

* Participated and raised money for Breast Cancer Walk

* Recognized all three fire departments within the community and donated to their annual drives

* District wide social for all union groups at Brennan’s

* Ads in local newspapers (St. James Our Town and The Smithtown News) supporting our students

* Recognized the achievement of becoming an Eagle Scout for young men in the community

* In addition to the STA contributing to existing scholarships, the STA developed their own Scholarship for two graduating Smithtown HS seniors

* Developed “Unity Days” and encouraged teachers to purchase and wear their new STA shirts

* Teachers are giving a magnetic frame to all incoming kindergarten students at their kindergarten screenings, frames state ”From Your Future Teachers”

* Participated in the Business Olympics serving as judges, and made a donation to the Industry Advisory Board

* Made donation to the Gala concert in support of the Smithtown College Scholarship program

* Made a basket donation to support the Mills Pond PTA

* April 4, 2008 “Smithtown Cares” district wide food pantry event supporting St. Pat’s Outreach program
